Getting around is all part of the Aore Island experience. Transport here is simple, local and informal — boats connect Aore Island with Santo, and taxis and local vehicles make it easy to get around once you're on the mainland.

Transport may be a little different from what you're used to, but that's part of island life.

🚤 Getting Between Aore & Santo

The main way to travel between Aore Island and Santo is by boat across the channel.

The trip is short, and once you reach Santo you can connect with a taxi or other local transport for shopping, sightseeing, restaurants or exploring the island.

Boat services operate Monday to Friday, with limited weekend services available by arrangement. Evening transfers may also be possible on request.

Island tip: Boats are generally open motor boats without weather protection, so bring a hat and sunscreen on sunny days and something waterproof if rain is about.

🚕 Getting Around Santo

Taxis are readily used for getting around Luganville and surrounding areas.

Local taxis are simple and practical, and some may not have air-conditioning. They're a normal part of getting around Santo and are widely used by locals and visitors.

Before getting into a taxi

Always agree on the fare before you leave.

If you'd like the driver to wait while you shop or make several stops, agree on the total price and waiting time beforehand.

This avoids misunderstandings and makes the trip easier for everyone.

🛍️ Going to Santo for Shopping

Planning a trip into Luganville for groceries, markets or supplies?

Your host can help coordinate a boat transfer and local transport so you can get there and back without having to organise everything yourself.

If you're planning several stops, let the driver know before leaving and agree on the fare for the complete trip.

✈️ Airport Transfers

If you're heading home or continuing your travels, transfers to Santo–Pekoa International Airport can be arranged.

The journey is generally:

House → local vehicle → boat to Santo → taxi/transfer → Pekoa Airport

Allow plenty of time, particularly if weather or sea conditions are unsettled.
